In “Between Rocks and Hard Places—FIUs” (Money Laundering Bulletin, 16 October 2025), Himamauli Das comments on how the relentless growth in suspicious activity report (SAR) volumes combined with a focus on AML effectiveness have forced financial intelligence units (FIUs) to battle for resources. His suggestion? “Better usage of data, using AI and machine learning, could lead to more effective use of SARs.” Him adds: “There are broad issues around FIUs having the resources they need to effectively analyze big data sets, combine SAR data with other data sets, such as transactional data or customs data, and deploy innovative technologies against those data sets to effectively leverage SARs for actionable activity. There is a need to dedicate resources to effectively using those tools.”
