Now, It’s Controlling Venezuela’s Oil Cash” (Politico, 22 January 2026), Juan Zarate weighs in on the lack of clarity and oversight around the United States’ use of Venezuela’s oil funds. Commenting on the difficulties facing decisions to distribute funds, he asks: “If the regime puts in a request for the disbursement of a billion dollars, who’s going to track and audit that? I’m not sure I would trust anything the regime does. This is a nefarious group still in power.”
